Hiking Program
New to Arizona? Never hiked before?
Experienced hiker? We want you all
and more!!
The Anthem Country Club Hiking Program was designed with seven basic
objectives:
1. Safety first! Everyone who joins one of our hikes should feel
comfortable hiking at his/her own speed and capabilities. There will
always be a hike leader in front and a hike leader in the back of the
group. With rare exception, there are also 1 – 2 hike leaders in
between. All hike leaders have been trained in CPR and basic first-aid
and all carry a medical kit with them on the hikes.
2. Accommodate all hiking levels! Want to charge out and get some
exercise? We have chargers to go with you! Prefer to lag a little and
just focus on the beauty of the area? Please do and we will have a hike
leader and others with you! Whatever your hiking comfort level and
speed, we want to make this the best experience of your life and we look
forward to accommodating your individual needs!
3. Have fun! Other than “Safety”, this what we are all about. Anthem has
residents from throughout the country and the world. The hiking group is
a microcosm of that. The diversity of the group has been a real asset in
terms of everyone enjoying the activity and social opportunity. The
informal discussions driving to/from the hike, on the trail and at lunch
will make you feel at home very quickly!
4. Let’s eat!!! We can’t ignore this feature! Every hike includes a
lunch stop somewhere…...usually something quaint or a little off the
beaten path. Dining locations have been suggested by various hikers, or
hike leaders, and all are “pre-dined” by the hike leaders for quality,
quantity, service, price, individual checks, etc. The hike leaders hate
this part of the job, but someone has to do it!
5. Open the beauty of Arizona to all we can! If you are new to the area,
or even if you are not, but just haven’t gotten out in the back country,
here is the easy way to do it. All the hikes are researched, pre-hiked
and selected by the hike leaders. New hike suggestions are always
welcomed! In the Fall/Winter period, we focus on the Phoenix metro area,
up to Sedona and occasionally venturing as far north as Flagstaff.
During the Spring/Summer period, we focus on the mountain
areas…..Prescott, Flagstaff, Pine/Strawberry, Payson, etc. This is a
beautiful state! Come enjoy that beauty with us! Learn the very storied
history and the diverse geology of Arizona!
6. Provide our residents the opportunity to improve their fitness. It’s
fun and exciting to see the group progress! Some struggled initially to
walk around the block and are now able to enjoy 3 – 4 mile hikes (and
more). You can see not only their fitness improvement, but the growth in
their confidence as they learn to do something they never thought they
could do!
7. Offer special hikes…..we usually have one or two overnight hikes per
year. You will probably be pleased to hear these are not the campout
with the rattlesnakes overnighters! We stay in a hotel/motel somewhere.
Historically, these hikes have been to the Grand Canyon. However, we are
considering hiking the Chiricahua’s down south with a side trip to
Kartchner Caverns. The possibilities are endless.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’S)
Q. How do I sign-up for any given hike?
A. Sign-up sheets are available at both the Persimmon and
Ironwood Fitness Clubs usually at least a week before any
given hike.
Q. What if I forget to sign-up?
A. Please show up at the meeting point at the designated time
anyway. We should be able to accommodate you. Advance
sign-up does help us in assessing our needs, however.
Q. How do I know when hikes are scheduled?
A. There are several sources. A six month schedule is always
available at either Fitness Club for the current season. Feel free
to take a flyer with you. Reminders are also available through
weekly updates from the Club’s Management Staff, the
monthly Fitness Club calendar of activities and a flyer for the
next scheduled hike is available at both Fitness Clubs.
Q. Do I need a doctor’s approval before I participate?
A. There is NO REQUIREMENT for a doctor’s approval to
participate. However, we strongly encourage anyone in doubt
about their physical capabilities, or anyone who does not
exercise on a regular basis, to consult with their primary
physician before taking on any potentially strenuous physical
activity.
Q. How much do the hikes cost?
A. At the present time, there is no direct charge for the hikes other
than the “special” overnight hikes mentioned previously.
For the “normal” hikes, we strongly encourage carpooling to
save participant costs, minimize parking space needed at the
trailheads (some have limited parking) and encourage the
building of friendships. We “suggest” a fee be paid to the
driver, by the rider, of $5 - $15 depending on the length of the
trip. This is simply to share the cost of gasoline, automobile
wear and tear, etc. Occasionally, a very nominal parking fee
may be involved for access to a particular trail. The only other
cost would be for your lunch, assuming you would want to
participate, and we strive to use restaurants that provide good
food and service for under $10.
On the “special” hikes, there is normally a fee to cover the cost
of the staff leading the hike and a hotel cost in addition to the
costs incurred on the regular hikes. All of this will be outlined
for you well before any sign-up time, so you can evaluate the
cost/value to you.
Q. How often are hikes conducted?
A. Frequency varies somewhat. We generally avoid major
holidays, major recurring events such as Wednesday Club, for
example, and attempt to alternate week-days (usually Tuesday)
and week-ends (usually Saturday). Four hikes/month would be
a reasonable expectation, year-round. Yes, that is why we do
the mountains when it is HOT in Anthem!
